The Vegetarian Diet

The date is October 2015. This is the third year of mostly consistent vegetarianism I have been able to perform. Sure, a few slices of fish and seafood were had here and there, though I have stayed clear of eating poultry or red meat for the most part.

People ask me if I do it for the animals. Or if I ever crave going back to eating meat.

The answers are no and yes. No, I do not do it for the animals: While I am well aware of the environmental impact that industrial-sized breeding projects have, I did not make a decision based on these facts of the world. My own biology pushed me towards making such a change.

Once upon a time I was a full omnivore: I ate whatever I wanted with no regrets or repercussions. This was a mostly good era — I even dared experiment with veganism and vegetarianism for a while, but I was always drawn into the blandness of omnivorism: It was the bacon, as many have said before. It was all good and I liked the variety that was there in regional dishes, in international cuisine, and in the simple and good old cheeseburger. These were days of no worries and a very mediocre diet overall. Days of pleasure and eventually days of pain… Days which should have not come at all. Days that made me realize something was going on with me.

At first I paid little attention to my body. Surely, I must have eaten a certain specific food that made me feel bad and get sick. Though being as obsessive as I am about this type of problem, I decided to experiment a little and see what was making me sick. It turned out to be meat: Red meat and poultry. Eating them would bring me pleasure, but processing them was a completely different story and something that I did not want to do at all. Luckily, with those few times that I decided to experiment with vegetarianism and veganism, I knew exactly what I needed to do.

Three years have passed since I realized my little predicament, and I have not had any problems with my diet. On the contrary: I am healthier than I have been in a long time, as this vegetarian diet of mine combined with the amounts of exercise I regularly do are turning my body into something great.

Vegetarianism is surely not something for everyone, though in my case it is the way to go. Maybe one day I will discover a better source of meat that is neither tainted nor tainting and I will be able to not only enjoy it, but also to move on to the next thing.

One can dream.
